Our Ministry Teams

The work of our teams at St. George’s

is expansive and invigorating

In terms of Episcopal Churches in Maine, the structure of our parish is rather unique. In fact, our ministry team set-up was highlighted at a recent diocesan gathering as a possible template for other churches to follow. Ten different teams, each with its own mission, plan and budget, work to make our programs resonate both with parishioners, and the wider world. We work with each other, share ideas, and lend support. Each member of our Vestry (church governing body) is a convener or co-convener of one of these Ministry Teams. The collaboration is amazing, and the results are heart-warming and spiritually uplifting.

Meet Our Teams

Buildings and Grounds

The recently completed capital campaign provided funds for an extensive renovation of our church building to improve safety, accessibility and flexibility. Addition of an elevator, sprinkler system, commercial kitchen and disabled entrance has made it possible for us to welcome a low-cost, high quality daycare center to our space. Our B&G team makes certain our facilities are always clean, open and well-maintained. They also take care of our grounds, hosting “stewardship in Action” days to plant and weed the ample gardens. Finally, they do work on our beautiful 1895 14 room rectory, which abuts the church property.  Our team is also committed, wherever and whenever we can, to focusing on improving energy-efficiency and creating a sustainable footprint for our campus.

Hospitality and Events

The Parish Events and Hospitality Team focuses on social events that create St. George’s signature welcoming environment. Throughout the year this team plans at least two social events each Fall and Spring, and at least one event during the summer months. Past events include our ever popular Chocolate Fest, our Parish Picnic, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, Rummage Sale  and the Christmas Parade. These events are much anticipated by our parishioners and folks in the surrounding communities. This active team also coordinates the coffee hour that follows each of the Sunday services.

The finance team meets monthly, under the leadership of a vestry member and a co-convener. Members of this vital team monitor income and spending throughout the year. They create the first draft of a new budget for the Treasurer to review. They also recommend financial and investment policies to the Vestry, our lay governing body.

Chair: Fred Lynk

Mission and Service

The Mission and Service team challenges us to deepen our relationships with our neighbors and identify new ways of reaching beyond the borders of our church to respond to needs locally, regionally and worldwide. Members of this team help us will identify where the ‘front line’ of our church is, “where we confront the moral and spiritual malaise of our society,”  They help us find ways to move our front line further out into the community, and they help us use our bottom line to work for justice as we provide loving service.

Adult Faith Exploration

The Adult Faith Exploration Team’s primary goal is to create a place for adults to learn, share, and grow as individuals in community serving God in this world. To this end, we provide opportunities to gather in reflection and conversation, building mutual support and developing spiritual tools and practices. At St. George’s we’re exploring a variety of ways to grow in these important relationships.  Our program year runs from September to May. We generally have monthly lay and clergy led programs on various topics.

Children, Youth and Family

This ministry focuses on our young parishioners and families. The youth of our parish are just as engaged in service to others as our adult teams. They initiate and participate in community service projects, helping out at various local non-profits. They also travel on mission trips to help those in need outside our neighborhoods. They also form a community where they can come together and just have fun.

The Stewardship Team at St. George’s focuses on encouraging members and friends of the parish to consider the theology of stewardship and how our lives might better reflect it.  While one task the team assumes is the fall financial pledge campaign, this team also provides opportunities to reflect on various aspects of stewardship as discipleship, through educational and conversational events offered several times during the year.
